Ground Hoppers Report from “Dig a Dog” of Melksham :
FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Saltash United 1 Odd Down 0
Admission: £5 Paper available Attendance: 90+
First visit to this cracking ex-Western League ground. Very tidy affair with lovely clubhouse and a cosy covered seating area. Nice elevated area in one corner near the tea bar which is where I watched a good win for the Step 6 side over Step 5.
Odd Down and their management team were their usual argumentative and sweary selves bemoaning every decision loudly and criticising the referee. I really won’t miss them this season. The game itself wasn’t great but absorbing enough.
Odd Down had a lot of the ball but were mostly toothless up front. Saltash had less but what they had they used to great effect especially out wide. More and more they were quicker to the ball and had several near misses either from saves or skied attempts. As it looked like a replay looming a free kick was swung across to the back post and the home No. 5 headed in through an improbable gap between the keeper and the post.
Vile weather on the drive from Starcross but cleared for the game. Back to the tent in an hour to top off a good afternoon.
