Ground Hoppers Report from “Dig a Dog” of Melksham :

Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Division One East
    University Ground
University of Exeter 1 Alphington 3
    F&N Attendance: 38 h/c

1830hrs KO at the swanky Uni sports HQ on the edge of Topsham. Lovely cricket square, rugby field and football pitch. Railed and with dugout, there is also some standing cover.
The visitors lost at Brixham in their opener. A fella at Saltash on Saturday said the Uni had a good team so I expected a good game. It was actually but reminded me so much of watching Bremhill/Pulse Academy at a similar level in the Wilds League last year. Technically very good young footballers, taught to play to feet, from the back up against seasoned Step7 teams usually go only one way. It did tonight.
The home side led on 24 with a great wing move and finish which was deserved. However they had survived a calamity on 22 when the home keeper dropped the ball to play out but lost control of it. Disaster avoided by pulling down the away forward which the referee didn’t think was a penalty!
Lightning struck twice on 29 when an almost copycat situation resulted in the CB doing the same having had the ball passed to him. This was converted.
The home side didn’t change a thing. Lovely interchanges and excellent close skill but all foundered on a well drilled defence. They suffered a sucker punch on 44 with an arrowed cross field pass to a galloping fullback who.controllef and finished well. HT 1-2.
It got worse as more poor defending on 54 saw a blocked shot rebound and then volleyed in the corner of the net. Alphington didn’t need to do much more than keep the home side at arms length which they did comfortably.
I like the slow build, play from the back type football…hell, even my team now do it after years of hoof by sometimes you just need to adapt and stop d*cking about and get rid.
A satisfying evening, a nice tick and back to the tent to hit Teignmouth pubs for my birthday tomorrow with Mrs Dog.
