The league was advised yesterday evening that Appledore AFC wish to withdraw from the East Division of the South West Peninsula League with immediate affect and the league officers have reluctantly accepted that notice today.

The Appledore club have cited player availability which has affected the results all season and especially the commitment to travel to play away fixtures. The Appledore club have also given the uncertainty caused by the proposed FA Re-Structure as a reason for the problems and have already written to the FA with the clubs thoughts on that issue, anything further on that point would be best to come from the Appledore club themselves.

They have been long standing members over many years, playing in the old South Western League, then the Devon County League and since 2007 in the East Division of the South West Peninsula League. Over the years they have been good servants to those leagues and to the community they serve, it is certainly a sad day to see them withdraw.

Forthcoming fixtures will be postponed, they were not due in action this coming weekend but were next due to have played Torridgeside on Boxing Day. Changes to fixtures will be made over the coming days and published in the normal ways.

    Regards

    Philip Hiscox (League Secretary)

    Very sad to read this.

Only ever been to Appledore once – the Devon League hop game in April 1999 – but have always considered them a “proper” football team.

As far as the FA is concerned, whatever happened to “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”?
