I was saddened to hear today that Phil Margrett, formerly a long standing and successful manager of Budleigh Salterton AFC, and more recently a local league Referee, passed away this morning.

Phil was a hair-dresser in his home town of Sidmouth and his son Jason played for many East Devon clubs such as Budleigh Salterton and the Royal Marines.

He had been suffering for some time with motor neurone disease.

We extend our sympathy to all of Phil’s family & friends and would ask that a Minutes silence be observed at games involving East Devon sides tomorrow.

Phil was an absolute legend in local football managing Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth Town and I think briefly at Cullompton Rangers. I always enjoyed Phil’s company when refereeing at these clubs, yeah he always encouraged me to get pissed after the game and arranged for an Exeter based player to take me home eventually, many a bolicking I received from my wife returning home from Budleigh.

A true gentleman and great local football man, we have lost a gem today. RIP Phil from myself, Mark, Sue, Jimmy and all the old Exeter Civil Service boys.
